Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup extended a warm welcome to more than 150 volunteers from throughout Arizona attending the 3rd Annual Southern Regional Conference on September 15-17, 2005. Conference hosts were the Citizen Corps Councils from Cochise, Pima, Santa Cruz and Yuma Counties. Through a series of presentations and workshops, volunteers acquired new knowledge and skills and a greater ability to respond to an emergency or disaster in their communities. In his welcome to those attending the conference, Les Caid, Chairman of the Arizona Citizen Corps Council, wrote: "As we have seen in the past few years and in particular the past few weeks, disasters disrupt hundreds of thousands of lives each and every year. These emergencies and disasters not only affect the health and welfare of the public, but have long term effects on our communities, individuals, families and business community. Being prepared and understanding what to do can reduce fear, anxiety and losses that accompany disasters. Communities, families and individuals should know what to do in a fire and where to seek shelter during a natural disaster. Knowing that you should be ready to be self sufficient for at least three days is the right first step. This may mean that you must provide your own shelter, first aid, food, water and sanitation needs until help can get to you. To focus attention on citizen preparedness and citizen participation in hometown security, September has been named National Preparedness Month. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, American Red Cross and your local, regional and state Citizen Corps Councils, along with other partners want to highlight the importance of citizen emergency preparedness. A local disaster can quickly overwhelm existing agencies' ability to meet the needs of the public. We must all do our part to prepare for the worst and help each other and our community. Citizen Corps play a vital role in championing this effort at all levels, but it cannot work without your involvement. ARE YOU READY?
