Disease Control strives to reduce the incidence of disease morbidity and mortality in Pima County. This is accomplished through the efforts of the following sections:

Epidemiology
This section assists in identifying community health problems, compiling the Pima County Health Status Report, and developing appropriate intervention programs and strategies. The major components of epidemiological activity in Disease Control are:

HIV/AIDS
The goal of this section is to prevent the spread of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and the development of AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) through surveillance, case reporting, partner notification, counseling, testing, referral and education. The major components of HIV/AIDS activity in Disease Control are:

Well Woman Program
Offers services to women who are 50 and older, who have a low income and do not have insurance.  FREE mammograms and pap tests are also available
Immunizations
This section focuses on prevention through immunizations, investigations, and the implementation of disease control measures for vaccine preventable disease (VPDs). The major components of immunization activity in support of Disease Control are:
Monitoring progress towards the Year 2000 Goal of immunizing 90 percent of two-year old children in Pima County.
Child Care and school immunization assessments.
Provider base clinic record assessments.
Ordering, distributing and monitoring the public funded vaccine for Department clinics and community sites.
Provide information on immunization schedules, administration techniques and vaccine management.
Maintain a system for Department clinics to remind parents to return for their children's immunizations.
Investigation of reported VPDs to confirm the problem case, determine the areas of risk, and implement appropriate control measures.
Collaborate with the Southern Arizona Immunization Committee.
Establish new mother education programs in Pima County hospitals.
Maintain the HBgAg positive, perinatal Hepatitis B program.
Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD)
This section is responsible for the monitoring and reporting of STDs in Pima, Santa Cruz and Cochise Counties. The major components of STD activity in Disease Control are:
Provide clinical services for the diagnosis, treatment, follow up and education of patients with STDs.
Provide epidemiological support for the community on all cases of early syphilis, including partner referral services for these patients.
Provide education and training to medical providers and targeted community groups.
